Celebration of Saudi National Science Day - March 11, 2023 - at the Applied College
Overview of Science Day
For centuries, the Saudi flag has remained a witness to the glory of the nation, standing tall with what it reflects of unity, cohesion, and an unwavering spirit. Science has become an integral part of the fabric of the national kingdom, drawing its great significance from the historical depth and cultural heritage that the kingdom possesses. These signify growth, prosperity, generosity, unity, and national cohesion. On March 11, 1937 (27 Dhu al-Hijjah, 1355 AH), King Abdulaziz - may God have mercy on him - approved the design of the flag that we see now flying in the sky of the kingdom
Based on that, the royal decree was issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud - may God protect him - to designate March 11 as a day for science, in which we annually remember our pride in the symbol of our national identity and our pride in the firm values that it carries in its content, upon which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is based
The history of the Saudi flag
When King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud - may God have mercy on him - recaptured Riyadh and began to reunify the country, the flag he chose was white with a green border. It was square and in the center, it had the phrase "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah" surrounded by two crossed, vertical swords. The design changed over time, with the addition of a single horizontal sword above the phrase of the testimony, and then to a design with the testimony above a single sword with the words "Victory from Allah and imminent conquest" written below the sword. Eventually, the flag became green with the testimony in the center, and this design has remained until the present day. The current flag is rectangular in shape, with a width equal to two-thirds of its length. The color is green, extending from the hoist to the edge of the flag. It has the testimony "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah" in the center, with a drawn sword positioned below it, parallel to it, and pointing to the right. The testimony and the sword are in white in the middle of the flag.
The national flag embodies the concept of the state and expresses the national unity and historical depth of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The flag is a symbol of the state and the country, representing pride, dignity, status, and the principles upon which the country is built. The flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an inherited flag, as the first flag of the Saudi state during the reign of Imam Muhammad bin Saud bin Muhammad bin Muqrin was a green flag embroidered with silk and brocade, with the phrase "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah" written on it. When they unified the country and defended it, the imams would hold the flag for one of their sons or entrust it to someone. Imam Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Saud, the founder of the second Saudi state, adopted the flag as the flag of the state while reunifying the country and bringing its people together under one leadership.
On 27 Dhu al-Hijjah 1355 AH, corresponding to March 11, 1937, King Abdulaziz - may God have mercy on him - approved the decision of the Shura Council number (354) on 4 Dhu al-Hijjah 1355 AH / 1937, regarding the adoption of the dimensions of the Saudi flag at a ratio of (150 cm in length) and (100 cm in width), and the acceptance of various sizes and shapes of the flag, and the exchange of flags with other countries based on the principle of international courtesy and diplomacy. In 1356 AH / 1937, the Shura Council issued decision number (50) on 2 Jumada al-Awwal 1356 AH / 1937, regarding the Saudi flag, which included the allocation of flags for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Crown Prince, the Army and the Internal Aviation, the Internal Flag, the Royal Saudi Naval Flag, and the Commercial Maritime Flag.
On 10 Rajab 1371 AH / 1952 AD, the Shura Council issued decision number (69) regarding the dimensions and modifications of flags. Then, on 2 Safar 1393 AH / 1973 AD, the flag system of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was issued by a decision of the Council of Ministers number (101) in twenty-two articles. On 10 Jumada al-Awwal 1398 AH / 1978 AD, the regulatory bylaws for the flag system were issued by a decision of the Council of Ministers number (422) in seven articles. On 10 Rabi' al-Awwal 1407 AH / 1986 AD, His Highness the Minister of Interior issued decision number (7) regarding the standard specifications approved by the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization for the national flag.
